Traceability for the egg industry
Robust traceability systems are critical to ensuring that in the event of egg quality and food safety issues, the correct farms, specific production areas or sheds can be efficiently identified, and steps taken to rectify concerns. Traceability is also crucial for building consumer confidence in the entire egg industry and should remain a key focus of all producers, regardless of their size.
The Traceability for the Egg Industry project, funded by Commonwealth grant funds, aimed to encourage further the adoption of traceability in the Australian egg industry and improve accessibility to traceability technology for producers that are faced with knowledge, technical or financial barriers.
On completion of this project, Australian Eggs have developed EggTrace – a browser-based tool for egg traceability data capture and storage. It democratises traceability and ensures that all egg farmers have access to the tools and technology required to trace eggs from lay to dispatch, providing the transparency to act quickly in the event of a recall or food safety issue. The software is free and easy to use; any data entered remains in the device and is not shared to a central server. If you are a For Farmers member, CLICK HERE to access EggTrace.
Another key project outcome is the comprehensive traceability manual which outlines best practice for tracking eggs and provides advice and guidance to support the design of reliable traceability systems for egg farms of any size. The manual can be accessed via the PDF button above.
Additionally, the newly created Australian Eggs Traceability Hub provides farmers with a range of resources to encourage the adoption of traceability, including factsheets, videos, and case studies. From this hub, For Farmers members can also easily access EggTrace and traceability manuals.
